Description
The beautiful colors of Death Valley are caused by the oxidation of different metals (iron salts produce red, pink and yellow, decomposition of tuff-derived mica produces green, and manganese produces purple). If you are willing to get up early in the morning, you will not be disappointed, much of the color washes out in the intense midday sun. There is much more than sand dunes in Death Valley. This formation was near Artist's Palette, and the early morning crescent moon was getting ready to set behind the rocks.
